On November 19-20, the Bogotá Chamber
of Commerce, and their flagship business
program Bogotá Emprende, in partnership
with the Mayor’s Office, held their “2009
Entrepreneurship Festival” in celebration
of Global Entrepreneurship Week.
Colombia is one of the leading South
American nations participating in this
worldwide effort to bring business activities
to the entrepreneurial community
throughout the country.
The keynote speaker at the opening general sessions at the chamber’s
Chapinero and Keneddy venues was Janet Cronick, a small business owner
from Orange County, California. Ms. Cronick is President of Ultimate Gifts, a
promotional marketing company that helps clients enhance their brand
through the use of logo branded products, a champion of women-in-
business issues and an leader active with various business organizations.
Ms. Cronick shared her experiences, challenges and opportunities of being
an entrepreneur in the United States, with the conference attendees. Cronick
states, "I am truly impressed by the entrepreneurial spirit in Colombia – the
entrepreneurs I had the opportunity to meet are making great efforts to
develop sustainable businesses through better training and technical
assistance. They are taking the right steps to improve their lives and bring
economic prosperity to their families and their communities”.
Cronick was invited to join the U.S. State Department’s international
speakers program in 2006, and has traveled to Latin American to share her
experience as a small business owner with many businesswomen
organizations, national universities, local micro-enterprises, NGO’s,
chambers of commerce, grass roots organizations and young entrepreneurs
from low-income communities, on behalf of the U.S. Embassies in
Guatemala, Panama, Argentina, Peru, Dominican Republic, Bolivia and
Colombia. Her presentations, lectures and seminars on micro-
entrepreneurship focus on sharing tips to help aspiring entrepreneurs
develop basic business skills, and entrepreneurial thinking to broaden their
knowledge about free-market opportunities. In October, Cronick attended
the Pathways to Prosperity conference in Washington, DC and was invited to
join the program as a mentor.
